Your 3:00 PM slump is chronobiology

September New Moon

Hello Reader,

Tonight is a new moon, a natural moment to reset and wipe the slate clean. If transitioning out of summer and getting back into high gear has felt heavy, your body is simply responding to chronobiology: the science of how we adapt to natural rhythms.

Three Clocks

Ever notice around three o'clock most afternoons, after ninety minutes of good work, your focus drifts and a snack starts calling? That dip is the ultradian clock, the roughly ninety minute rhythm of focus and recovery that runs through the whole day (and night!), and it is one of three clocks the body keeps at once. You've likely heard of the circadian clock, which follows light and dark across 24 hours. The infradian clock runs longer, through monthly cycles and the seasons, the same kind of clock that tells birds when to migrate.

We are ruled by nature's rhythm. I wrote a longer blog about aligning our actions by these clocks to optimize our sleep, mood, and wellbeing. I truly believe this is the secret to longevity and living longer, better.
